Just in time for the holidays, Los Angeles received an amazing gift: its very own outpost of the famous Finnish design brand. My love for Marimekko is well-documented: I was raised with a Unikko (above) pattern over my crib, nearly hyperventilated while I was touring the Helsinki factory, have placed plenty of colorful fabrics in our home, and own at least three Marimekko dresses at any given time.
And so when I got invited to the opening party of course I put on my favorite one and headed over.
You know, so the dress could reunite with her Finnish friends.
The store is absolutely gorgeous. It’s very Scandinavian, all blonde wood and blondes.
I’m not sure if this was just for the party, but there was a forest, a legitimate PILLOW FOREST, featuring the most famous Marimekko designs suspended from the ceiling.
Also? Acres upon acres of fabric, stacked into ceiling-high towers of patterns, eagerly awaiting your next room renovation.
Everyone got into the Marimekko spirit.
And as you can see, I felt right at home.
Although I’m bummed I missed this moment: A Unikko balloon soaring over LA!
Marimekko is now open in Beverly Hills, at the corner of Canon Drive and Brighton Way. If you go on December 15 they’ll sew you a tablecloth for free. I think you all know what you’re getting for Christmas.
